Radiator Mug

Designed by Stephen Reed.

The Radiator Mug is the first of its kind to explore the use of a traditonal material such as bone china, juxtaposed with a design component generally used in the computer industry: cooling fins.

The fin structure covers the entire base of the mug and help to redistribute heat, putting distance between the hot liquid in mug and user’s contact surface. Reed’s mug design allows for a more natural grip with the elimination of handles.

The Radiator Mug first showcased at 100% Design in London, where Charles & Marie discovered Reed selling his first prototypes at the Super Design Mart.

“My question was what if a mug can be designed so that it is not hot to hold in the first place? I realized that I could integrate a form in the ceramic which distances the hot core from the hand,” explained Reed. ” I think a major reason for the heat reduction is because the fins have a smaller surface area than the cylindrical wall of a normal mug. This means you are holding something that is still quite hot but you are exposed to a small area - like when you hold a hot plate by its thin edges.”

Reed’s mug design stands out by being simple yet sophisticated. “Next to the fact that it is a very cool idea, it is also a very elegant and good looking one,” said Marcus Greinke, CEO of Charles & Marie.

Made of bone china, the mug will hold 10 ounces of your chosen beverage.
